Hydroponics: Future Possibility?
I've had this idea nudging at me for a while, so I decided to throw it out there in a post. There is a method of gardening that grows plants using mineral nutrient solutions in a water solvent instead of soil, called hydroponics. This comes with a lot of benefits, from plants growing faster to less water usage.
There are a few things that stick out to me when I consider hydroponics:
Extra Oxygen - The extra oxygen in the growing mediums (the material that the plants are growing in) stimulates root growth, which leads to higher yield.
Direct Nutrients - The nutrients are mixed in to the water mixture, so the roots don't need to search for nutrients in the soil.
Less Water - Hydroponic gardening uses WAY less water than traditional gardening.
No Need for Pesticides - Although we already don't use any pesticides, I thought that it was interesting that since most pests live in the soil, using this method would eliminate the need for pesticide use.
Based on some YT videos I watched, there are many different kinds of simple, DIY hydroponic systems that we could potentially make to test out the idea in our garden. I think we might give it a try next year with an easy-to-make system I found online and see how it goes!
