Wheeling into the New Year

As I plan into the year I mentioned using a wheelbarrow, but I didn't really say too much about what it was going to do and how it is.

Well, here's the thing, the wheelbarrow currently isn't in the best state. In the summer of 2022, Ms. Paulson showed me a wheelbarrow that has been around before my high school career(2020!) It is a piece that holds sentimental value and is a testament to the legacy of gardeners.

On the right is a picture of the current wheelbarrow after being assessed. I teamed up with a group of Hope Members to take apart the broken parts to the wheel. As well as a look at the broken off handle. This wheel barrow was created by the OG gardeners, the garders who started it all! Their names can be see on the right but you notice that it cuts off... That's because the handle of the wheelbarrow broke off.

As we can see on the left, there the parts are really rusty, and in person the parts are very worn down. In fact, I straight up pulled the bolt out and it fell out!

These part(s) in question--wheel axle, bolt, and nut(holds bolt in place)-- is the axle which the wheel rests on and bolts which held the axle in place. The tire itself had deflated with time and the parts that held the axle together were quite eroded from the weather and needed replacement of sorts.

With this investigation, we have decided to brace the broken arm, replace the axle and bolts that hold the wheel in place. The cherry on top, would be repainting the flaked off red pain on the wheelbarrow, but we don't need to worry too much about that.
