Food Crisis
Fueled by inflation and shortages, our economy is indeed going through a food crisis.
As much as we don't notice it in America, 345 million people face food insecurity in 82 countries as stated by the World Food Programme. Fueled by skyrocketing prices for food and production, world conflict(war in Ukraine) and the pandemic has driven many near starvation. Part of the problem is the instability in notational food system and related supply chains. The other issue is the rising price of cost to deliver the food.
The USDA has 4 levels of food security and insecurity:
High Food Security - No problems or limitations in food supply/intake
Marginal Food Security - Anxiety over food supply or thought of shortage of available food but no changes in food intake
Low Food Security - Reduced quality of diet but no reduction in food intake
Very Low Food Security - Lack in food availability and so, reduction in food intake and increased hunger
When we look at solutions, hydroponics although expensive could bring farming and food to these countries. Even 12% of the US population suffers from some level of food insecurity. Low access to fresh foods can be solved with hydroponic greenhouse. Hydroponic greenhouse are vertical towers which don't need soil and take up less land in comparison to traditional farming. Climate, water, and stale/rotten food isn't a problem when you have your own garden down the street.
In countries like Africa where there is a lack of many things, creating a agricultural hub would create jobs, support local green initiatives, and improve food supply. Getting hydroponics on it's feet and going will reduce the cost for food supply and shipment. Hydroponic growing increase yield in a small space and even use water efficiently. Water in hydroponics is typically in a loop and kept in the system. In small communities in Africa where water scarcity is an issue, these communities would highly benefit from hydroponics.
In fact, this idea is already starting to take place! Hydroponics Africa is backed by a group of pioneers who take hydroponics in a simplified manner to spread hydroponic farming over East and Central Africa. I recommend checking them out when you have the time!
