Gleaning!!!

As you may (or may not) know, today there was an opportunity for HOPE club members to go gleaning at Longmeadow Farm in Hope, NJ. Gleaning is basically where people pick up produce that would be unable to be sold in, let's say, a supermarket or are leftover. However, this produce is STILL edible and it just might be slightly bruised or 'damaged' in some way. To ensure that this produce does not go to waste, people go gleaning and collect them for further uses. The two HOPE club members who went gleaning were Lauren Oudine and Jessie Wahler.

They gleaned cucumbers, green beans, melons, acorn squash, and apples.

All in all, A LOT of produce was gleaned and will be delivered to local food banks to feed local families.

For a quick garden update: tomatoes, swiss chard, and scallions were harvested and squash are still growing. Someone(s) (I think it was the maintenance, thank you!!) pulled out the bush (?) growing in the kitchen box so now it is clear.

Slightly destroyed but still clear. :)

I love this picture of the harvest because of how round the tomatoes look and how crisp the swiss chard is.

In case anyone is wondering why there are holes in the tomatoes, I found a caterpillar -.-

Hopefully I'll see you at next week's HOPE club meeting. It's the first one for this school year!!!
