End Of September Harvest!
After a warm Thursday morning of picking vegetables, we have our third harvest of the school year! We got a variety of greens such as cucumbers, lettuce, and Swiss chard, as well as different peppers and, of course—tomatoes!
As we dive into fall and begin October, it's getting clear that our harvesting days are numbered. We hope to start moving everything from the garden indoors once November kicks in, but until then we're going to enjoy the season while it lasts!
Things are still not looking so ripe in the pepper department. There are still a lot of dark streaks across the bell peppers, which mean that they are approaching harvesting time, but not quite there yet. My gardener instincts would tell me that they'll be good by the end of October, but then again that intuition doesn't exactly exist yet, so I'll see what Annie thinks. Maybe by the end of the school year I'll have my own gardener expertise!
I think that after having experienced the whole gardening cycle, (from preparing the soil, bedding, planting, tending to the plants, and harvesting), I finally feel that I can help guide the next generation of gardeners through the journey of running the garden here at Morris Hills, and that I can learn more from Annie's deep experience now that I have all the basics down. I remember her advice from last blog about growing broccoli farther apart, about three hands distance (although I'm sure that measurement will not be the same for myself) and to plant between two beds instead of one. Will be taken into account for next year!
Thanks for reading my first blog! See you all at the next HOPE meeting!
